Understanding OEM vs. ODM
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing)
You bring the design, we make the shoe. You provide a tech pack (sketches, materials list, construction details) and we handle tooling, sampling, and production. Typical MOQ: 800–1,200 pairs per style (depending on complexity). Lead time from order confirmation: 45–60 days. Sample cost: $100–$300 per style (deducted from production order).
ODM (Original Design Manufacturing)
We have existing shoe molds and designs that you can customize. Choose from our catalog of 200+ sneaker models, then modify colors, materials, and branding. MOQ: 300–600 pairs per style. Lead time: 30–45 days. Sample cost: $50–$150. This is faster and cheaper—ideal for testing a market.
Which Should You Choose?
If you have a strong brand identity and specific design, go OEM. If you want to launch quickly with lower risk, start with ODM. Many clients begin with ODM, then move to OEM once they understand their bestsellers.
Minimum Order Quantities (MOQs) and Pricing
Realistic MOQs
Sneakers are complex. Each size run requires multiple molds and lasts. Our minimum for a full-size run (US 4–13) is 300 pairs per colorway. For OEM with custom tooling, we ask 800 pairs per style. For ODM from existing molds, 300 pairs. If you need lower MOQs, we can split a container with other clients—but you’ll pay a 10–15% premium.
Price Ranges (FOB China Port)
- Basic canvas sneakers (ODM): $5.50–$8.00 per pair
- Leather sneakers (OEM): $12.00–$18.00 per pair
- Performance athletic shoes (OEM with EVA/TPU): $15.00–$25.00 per pair
- High-top fashion sneakers (ODM): $9.00–$14.00 per pair
Prices include materials, labor, and packaging (poly bag + box). Excluding shipping, duties, and branding labels. Volume discounts: 5% off for orders above 2,000 pairs, 10% above 5,000.
The Production Process Step by Step
1. Inquiry and Quotation
Send us your tech pack or choose an ODM model. We’ll provide a quote within 2 business days. Include target price, quantity, and delivery date.
2. Sampling
OEM: We make a first sample (3–5 days). You approve fit and materials. Then a second sample for size set (7–10 days). ODM: We send you an existing sample from our catalog. You request color/material changes; we make a revised sample (5–7 days).
3. Production
Once sample approved and 30% deposit paid, we order materials (2–3 weeks), then cut, stitch, assemble, and pack (3–4 weeks). Total: 5–7 weeks for ODM, 7–9 weeks for OEM.
4. Quality Control
We have in-line inspection during production and final random inspection (AQL 2.5). You can also hire a third-party QC. We share photos and videos of the production line weekly.
5. Shipping
We arrange FOB from Shanghai, Ningbo, or Shenzhen. Typical container load: 6,000–8,000 pairs per 40HQ. Sea freight to US West Coast: 25–30 days.
Quality Control and Compliance
Materials Testing
We test for colorfastness, abrasion, adhesion, and flexing. Our leather comes from tanneries certified by LWG (Leather Working Group). Rubber outsoles meet ASTM D623 for slip resistance.
Compliance Standards
We can produce to REACH (EU), CPSIA (US), and GB (China) standards. For California Prop 65, we avoid restricted phthalates and lead. We provide test reports from SGS or Intertek at cost ($200–$500 per style).
Defect Rate
Our internal target is <2% defects. If you find defects above 5%, we replace or discount. We stand behind our work.
Logistics and Payment Terms
Payment
- 30% deposit with order
- 70% balance before shipment (or against copy of B/L)
- For new clients, we may require 50% deposit first order
- Bank transfer (T/T) preferred. L/C at sight for orders >$50,000.
Shipping
We use freight forwarders who consolidate LCL or FCL. You can also arrange your own. We provide all export documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, and fumigation certificate if needed.
